Lower tract obstruction:

  • Neurogenic bladder
  • Posterior urethral valve
  • Primary bladder neck obstruction
  • Benign prostatic enlargement
  • Dysfunctional voiding
  • Urethral stricture
  • Calculi in the urethra
  • Urinary tract malignancies
  • Genitourinary tuberculosis

Treatment of obstruction may include mostly surgical and some times medical management. Surgical correction of the block might include peyloplasty, ureter stricture repair, clearance of the ureteric/ urethral calculi, ureteric reimplant, bladder neck incision, TURP, Removal of malignant obstruction and urethroplasty.

In case relieving obstruction is not possible due to any reason then diversion of the ureinary tract will help tide over the crisis for the kidneys by percutaneous nephrostomy or for bladder and urethra by suprapubic cystostomy. Diversion of the urine is undone once the primary problem has been corrected.
